Here at Forces Online we get enquiries from people who are trying to trace Forces records of family members.  The two main Charities that deal with these requests, and correspond directly with the MOD are currently shown below.  Underneath the image we have also shown their contact details, and some brief notes for guidence

The advice given from the MOD is:

  1. ID checking is for the charity to do – we do not need to see ID.

  2. Hand-signed and dated consent of the data subject (ex service person) must be supplied to us.  Consent should be clear that they agree to the RN/ARMY/RAF confirming/releasing their data to the charity.

  3. If consent is not provided, due to ill health of the data subject, then all we will do is confirm service, we will not provide dates of service. If you require dates of service then we will need a letter from a health professional advising that the data subject is unable to consent.

  4. If the spouse/ex spouse is applying to the Charity for help, and we do not have the consent of the data subject we will only confirm service.

  5. If the data subject is deceased and a family member is seeking assistance from the Charity they will need sight of the death certificate before we can supply any data.  Without the DC all we can do is confirm service.
